Revival Memphis – How Creating Memphis in May Helped Revive Memphis After 1968
After the 1968 assassination of Martin Luther King in Memphis, Memphis — especially its downtown — was economically damaged, even to the point that its downtown businesses were abandoned. It took bringing a highly diverse group of highly diverse leaders — Black, white, young, old, male and female — to work TOGETHER to bring back the city they all loved. A month-long festival called Memphis in May was a major catalyst in bringing people back to Downtown Memphis and helped to rebirth restaurants, hotels, shops, parks and entertainment at the Mississippi riverfront.
